Located in Cleveland County, Norman serves as the county seat. The city is currently the third largest one in the state. As of 2021, the population of Norman stood at 128,097. In addition to being the third largest city in the state, it's also the second largest city in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. Norman is around 20 miles from OKC.
As with other cities settled in the late 19th century, Norman came into being due to the land run of 1889, which opened acreage formally considered Indian territory to pioneers. The namesake for the city is Abner Norman, who was the land surveyor for the area. In May, 1891, Norman was officially incorporated.
Higher education is a key element within the culture in Norman. The city is home to the University of Oklahoma, which is considered the largest university in the state.
