Located in Oklahoma County, Edmond is considered to be a suburb of Oklahoma City and is found along the northern border of OKC. The city is also part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. At the time of the 2020 census, Edmond had a population exceeding 94,400 residents. That makes it the fifth largest city in the state.
Like many Oklahoma cities that came into being during the 19th century, the railroad was key to the beginnings of Edmond. During the great land run in 1889, a number of settlers secured and near the station operated by the Santa Fe line. Platting for the new town was created by the Seminole Town and Development Company, a business that had a number of ties to the railroad. Indeed, many of the streets laid out in the original platting were given names in honor of persons who had ties of some sort to the railroad. Within a year, the new town has a recorded population of 294.
Today, a number of industries provide employment for Edmond residents. The top five employers in the city are the Edmond Public School System, the University of Central Oklahoma, the City of Edmond, Mercy Edmond Clinics and Wellness Center, and Integris Health Edmond.
